Steve Cranko

Steve Cranko is a multidisciplinary artist whose life and work are shaped by a journey across continents and inner landscapes. Born in South Africa, he spent his formative years in Johannesburg and Cape Town before traveling through the Middle East and eventually settling in the Netherlands. His path included founding an advertising agency and silkscreen studio, studying theoretical computer science, and working in development aid across Africa, Bolivia, and Curaçao.

His artistic transformation emerged through moments of sudden clarity — including discovering his ability to paint lifelike oil portraits almost overnight — and through deep personal work involving self‑hypnosis, regression, and reframing.

Steve trained for several years at Swains Art Studio under British painter Paul Birchall, and currently studies at the Vrije Academie Nunspeet with Philip Knipscheer and Serob Darbinian, both known for their grounding in classical realism and expressive figurative traditions.
